I
t was smooth sailing for Scott Summers as he raced through Monteagle’s Mountain top and pulled the win for the Mid-South Hare Scramble Series’ tenth round. This time he ventured the Cross Country Motorsports Championship with little or no problems and eased into the TMT winner’s circle. He said, "My bike, suspension, and Maxxis tires worked really good today, so I just felt like my bike did the work. My bike was really floating through the rocks and the roots, and if I could just put a performance like that at a GNCC, then I’ll be doing better than I’ve been doing."
Other than his usual back of the pack start, he had a pretty uneventful ride. Off the start, he simply wasn’t paying attention so when the green flag raised, he sat there and watched everyone else take off as if he was going to enjoy honing in on his passing skills.
"I just started picking riders off," said Summers. "By the end of the first lap, I was right behind P.A. who was in first. When he stopped for gas, I got around him and just picked up the pace."
The other riders who made the podium also faced a similar starting challenge as P.A. Allen slid out sideways into a mid-pack position while Dustin Gibson was near the back of the thirteen men in the AA class.
About half way through the first lap, Team Green Kawasaki / Pro Circuit / Smith / Fox / Shift backed Allen charged into the lead with John Maschino and Scott Summers following. During the second lap, he led for most of the fourteen and a half miles raced and then suffered a few set backs from hitting a tree.
"It was hard to see the trail," said Allen, "so I took it easy on the first lap but really turned it up on my second lap. When Summers passed me, I charged as hard as I could to catch him but crashed. I either bent my fork tube or my triple clamps, broke my steering dampner, and it knocked me pretty silly. Then Dustin caught me, but I just put my head down and charged and got second."
Meanwhile Maschino and Gibson battled in third and fourth place. One hundred feet from the finish Maschno’s foot peg hit a stump, and he washed out while Sarge’s Cycles / KTM / Enduro Engineering supported Gibson made a final pass for the podium. Ten seconds later, Maschino finished in fourth.
Robert Patterson had the best ride of the A classes. He had a great start and was running in first place in overall during his first lap. Then he went down, did some damage, yet still won Vet A and made the top five in Overall.
Greg Tucker, Senior C winner, wanted to thank Scott Young and Greg Sims mainly for getting him brake fluid and bleeding his brakes on the starting line. He said, "I’ve been trying all year long to win. I’ve had a couple of seconds and a couple of thirds, but today I won and it couldn’t have happened without those guys."
