sk most men in the Mid-South Cross-Country Motorsports Championship what the Big Stripper is, and they’ll tell you that it’s no lady. However, it is Indiana’s hot spot for hare scrambles, and it planted more than one smile on the 361 racers in attendance for Mid-South’s fourth round.Charles Mullins came and conquered, and then he walked away with the biggest smile. He got the AA class win and found himself $500.00 richer when Lynnville Area’s Hunting Club sponsored the prize to the Overall winner. Racing his KTM, he charged for the lead on the second lap and tried to ride smart and smooth from that point forward.
Plessinger Cycles / Oneil / Enduro Engineering / Tire Balls backed Mullins said, "I just wanted to keep it up on two wheels so I could win. The last lap, I was pretty nervous because I went off of one of those ridges, but I got it up and felt good."
Off the start, Mullins fell into third place with John Robbins and P.A. Allen in the front while Doug Blackwell, Jeff Cregg, D.R. Atwood, and the rest of the pack were at his rear. Mullins continued his conquest, was fast and furious; and this time, it was with no mistake.
"I don’t know when I got into third place," said Black’s Motorsports / MX Tech / Scott / Mother’s Wax supported Atwood, "because I was mostly riding in sixth or seventh the whole race until the last lap."
Meanwhile the Indiana native, Cregg, was riding with a purpose. Although he suffered a back of the pack beginning, he pushed himself to the limits. On the third lap, Ben's Performance Center / Moose / Lidz by Fid / Johnny Sings / Bloomington Power Sports supported Cregg finally reached his goal.
"I got around P.A., and that was my goal for the day," laughed Cregg. "Right before the last lap, there was a corner where he followed a lapper, and I took the inside line and got around him. I put it on during the last lap. It was a tough day, and I’m tired of this second stuff. I’m ready for a win, but I’ll take the second."
For most of the race, Allen held onto second and third place until he got tangled with a lapper on the last lap. He literally had to get off of his bike and the two had to pull their bikes apart because the two were stuck together. Allen came in fourth and John Maschino finished in fifth place.
KTM mounted Paul Michels and Motor Exchange / Husquavarna / Maxxis mounted Marty Michels enjoyed a father and son win. Riding in Super Senior class, Paul grabbed the Super Senior win while Marty ventured the 250 A class win.
The Mid-South Hare Scramble Series just keeps getting bigger and better with its major contributing sponsors. The American Patriotic Getaways proudly boasted two free vacations for the Vet B and Vet C winners. Danny Coultas and Jerry Fishburn not only walked away with their class wins but they also are scheduled for some R and R at Gastlinburg, Tennessee.
