id-South’s last round rolled into paradise as the Cross Country Motorsports Championship finished out its year. They saved Tennessee’s hot spot in Vanleer for its grand finale venue, and there were 387 riders off of the start. Most everyone enjoyed Hazzard Hill because it is mostly tight woods and a picturesque setting.
It was a beautiful day for a great race, and no one soaked up the pleasure of winning more than the Mid-South Hare Scramble Series’ top riders. Sarge’s Cycles / KTM / Enduro Engineering / Pro Action of Kentucky / Maxxis backed Dustin Gibson and Max Pitts / Ben’s Performance Center / Johnnie Signs / Lidz by Fid supported Jeff Cregg were on cloud nine because they both finally achieved their long term goal, beating out Mid-South’s four time Champion, P. A. Allen.
Having raced all thirteen events, Gibson came out the Overall Champion. He made some impressive moves throughout the season and simply had a good time at Hazzard Hill. He jumped up the hill entertaining a crowd of spectators for each of the four laps raced. It really didn’t matter that he got tenth place in Overall because he earned the better win, the Championship. Congratulations were evident since Gibson worked so hard for every race but this one.
He said, "I feel like I have a big weight lifted off of my back. It feels great!"
Cregg on the other hand, wasted no time at getting the lead. Off the start, he got the holeshot and led for a mile then fell, giving Mike Sampson, Alan Westerfield, and Hayden Moore a chance out front. Throughout the first lap, he got tired of fourth place and ventured the lead again. This time, he didn’t give it up. He manhandled his RM 250 Suzuki for the next four laps and finished in first place in Overall, which earned him an extra $400 for leading four laps, and it moved him up to second place in Overall for the season.
"I am so glad to finally get a win," smiled Cregg. "I beat P.A. Allen. I only wish that everybody could have been here, but I’ll take the win."
Meanwhile the Hazzard Hill AA class poured it on as the podium finished the race. Cregg sustained the lead while former Champion, Mike Sampson and this year’s 4 Stroke A Champion, Alan Westerfield, charged back and forth. On the last lap, Westerfield put some lappers in between them and made second place in Overall while Sampson took third.
"I’m getting too old for this!" said Sampson. "I had a great line picked right at the end, but I was unable to use it. It was fun today, and I am worn out."
Chaz Akers finished out his race as the winner of 300 4 Stroke B. He won his class today and came out the Champion riding his Suzuki, 250F. Cody Patterson respectfully followed in second place.
