Hawk Hangs Hat
at
Mid-South Triple
BY
DEBBIE ALLEN
The GNCC’s number one
plate, Barry Hawk, hung his hat at a different location and broke out his YZ
250 for a good workout in
Off the start, Hawk
lavished fourth place out of the twenty-six AA riders. Team Green’s, P.A Allen, jumped to the lead
on an outside line while Doug Blackwell lined up on the inside and shot out of
the AA barrel first. Hawk then moved
into third, Blackwell dropped back to second, and Mid-South’s John Robbins
entered the wood’s section in the lead.
Three miles later, Suzuki
/ Sports Cycles Racing / DP Brakes mounted Blackwell took control and held
tight to the lead for the first three laps while Hawk kept a keen eye on his
target, moving to his side and drifting back but never passing until the last
lap.
Finally after three
long laps, the patient bird earned his worm.
Yamaha / Bridgestone / Factory Connection / MSR / Morgantown Yamaha
supported Hawk passed Blackwell right before the white flag. He checked out, and
then claimed his Overall prize.
Hawk said, “I
followed Blackwell most of the race. It
was a pretty tough track to pass on.
There weren’t very many lines out there. I think Blackwell fell, and I know a lapper
kind of slowed him down a bit. So, I tucked to the inside and got around
him. After that, I really pushed hard to
get the best time from the previous laps and tried to get as many lappers
between us.”
In the mean time
riding an RM 250 Suzuki, Blackwell resurrected and finished the race in second
place. He said, “I’m real happy with my
ride today. After taking the lead, Barry
caught up to me, and we pretty much stayed one and two for most of the
race. He made good use of a lapper to
get around me, but I kept up until I tangled with a stump and it got the best
of me.”
American Yamaha’s
Hawkins was the next rider to complete the four laps. He had an uneventful race, riding mostly in
third the entire time. Riding against
his doctor’s wishes, he said, “I’m excited about this race because I really wanted
to see if my wrist would hold up to these conditions, and it did just fine. It’s a little sore, but it’s
working great after surgery. I stayed in the podium and that’s what I wanted.”
The fastest Mid-South riders for the day included Lowe
Racing / Ironman / Maxxis / Suomy / Clarke backed Bersano and Suzuki
mounted Eric Elam. Bersano garnered
fourth place in the AA class while
