Round 1:  Three Creeks Station

Greenville, KY, Oct. 6

Mid-South’s first round revved into high gear as the AMA, Pirelli Tire, Moose, Parts Unlimited, and White Brothers sponsored series whirled into a new season.   On a beautiful day with perfect riding conditions, Three Creeks Station had 646 riders in Greenville, Kentucky.   With that many riders, the lappers made it very tough.   In spite, Team Green Kawasaki’s P. A. Allen set his KX 250 on cruise and piloted into a first place finish.

Team Green Kawasaki / Sarge’s Cycles/ Pro Action of KY / Oakley / GPR / One Industries backed Allen started the Mid-South season right.  He claimed the holeshot, rode smart, and stayed out front for most of the race.

“I had a good ride today,” said Allen.  “I never had to push it or ride over my head.  I just rode a good steady pace and had a good time.”

On the start, Allen quickly noticed a change.  He said, “After we got the signal to kill our engines, I was waiting for the ten second warning.  I looked at the flag man [Emmett Cox] and thought he’s going to start!  So without warning, I prepped my bike and was ready for the green flag.”

He took an outside line and jumped to lead the pack around two corners and a wood’s section.   John Robbins and Chris Hicks followed closely in second and third until Robbins fell over and Hicks grabbed for second.  Two miles before the end of the lap, Hicks took the lead when Allen overshot a turn.

During the second lap, Allen swapped for the lead shortly after being scored.  He stayed out front for most of that lap while Hicks dropped back to fifth place because he couldn’t see through his goggles.   Dustin Gibson and Jeff Cregg were not far behind and toward the end of the lap; they both passed him for a short lived moment when he stopped for gas.

“I passed them both two miles further on the trail,” said Allen.   “After I got the lead, I never lost it.  I had a good race with Cregg.  He wouldn’t allow me to make any mistakes.  He would catch up to me, and I would ride a little harder.”

Both riding for Team Green Kawasaki, Allen and Cregg made five laps and charged for the finish and pulled a big lead from sixteen other AA riders.

Bloomington Power Sports / Race Tech / Renthal / Scott / Alpine Star supported Cregg said, “P.A. and I battled together for a while going into the last lap.  We were one and two and stayed close together until some lappers got in between us.  I couldn’t catch back up to him.”

Cregg is currently winning the Indian, District 15 Series and has three more races.  He said, “I loved this race.  It was a great change from the dust.”

On a Sarge’s Cycles / KTM / Pro Action of KY / Moose / Smith sponsored Dustin Gibson rode an impressive race until he suffered a few set backs.  Out front on the second lap, he said, “P.A. got by me when we got behind some lappers.  I was stuck behind them, and P.A. jumped by us.”  A mile further, Gibson ran into a different lapper and fell.  He finished in third place.

John Robbins and John Roth topped out in fourth and fifth place.    Robbin’s Turbo / Cycle Shed backed Robbins said, “I was second on the start until I ran into a tree and flew into a rocky ravine.  It took me a while to get into the swing of things.  The last two laps, I found my way around the lappers.”

Roth said, “This race was all about putting lappers between you and the other riders.   It was really tough going into the third and fourth laps.”   There were several bottlenecks and it was difficult to pass the novice riders.

The fastest A class riders were Alan Westerfield, Harvey Whitaker, Jason Wofford, and Chris Taylor.  In 250 / Open A, Alan Westerfield tore up the Three Creeks trail.  He was the first A rider to cross the finish line and came in seventh place in overall.

Super Bike Shop’s Westerfield said, “I rode good and didn’t make any mistakes.  I think a pre-race prayer did a lot of good.  I rode fast and consistent, and this was the best track Greenville has had in three years.”

Wofford plowed through everything, riding his KTM EXC 525.   After a brief encounter with a lapper, he lost his rear brakes and ripped through everything in his path.  Unfortunately, Clint Robinson was in the big guy’s path.  He said, “I want to thank Clay Stuckey for giving me a chance to ride a KTM through Castle Power Sports.”
