Round 6:  Cottonmouth Hare Scrambles

White Plains, KY, April 13

West Kentucky’s finest hunting lodge moved aside to include one more attraction, hare scrambles.  The Cottonmouth Lodge opened its first event to the Mid-South Championship Winter Hare Scramble Series earlier in the season, but someone overlooked a very important date.  It was scheduled on opening day of gun season, so the AMA, Pirelli Tire, Moose, Parts Unlimited, and White Brothers sponsored date was postponed and it became the last race of the season.  It was well worth the wait as Alan Westerfield, the 250/Open A winner, got his first overall win in White Plains, Kentucky.

“It was kind of a survival course,” said Westerfield.  “Everybody was getting stuck in ruts and there were several mud holes.  Everything worked out for me, and I guess I got lucky and picked the right lines.”

Even though Westerfield’s class was the second class to leave the start, it didn’t stop him from grabbing the glory.  He and Timmy Pool and Michael Cornett battled throughout the whole race and caught two AA riders, Dustin Gibson and Steve Gordon on the first lap.  They caught up to them on a long fire road and then it was history for the AA class.   Pool made the fastest lap time and flew on his RM 250 Suzuki while Westerfield and Cornett manhandled their machines from behind.   Although Gibson held the front position for most of the race, he was actually running in fourth place due to lapsed time from the three front runners in the 250 /Open A class.

“I thought for a while that I would have to settle for third place,” said Westerfield, “because Dustin and Timmy were right in front of me for the first three laps, but they kept making mistakes and I kind of took advantage.  I was really happy to be able to race with Dustin for a while.  On the last lap, he got stuck in a big rut, and that was the last time I saw him.”

Westerfield swapped the lead several times with Pool and was always checking his back side for Cornett.  On the fifth lap, he got around Pool one last time in a swamp section when he took a faster line.   He said, “All season long, I’d have to check for Cornett because he’d be right behind you and you wouldn’t even know it.    He’s just like one of those stealth fighters; except, he’s riding a Kawasaki.”

On the last lap, Westerfield ran away with the lead and finished his first Mid-South Championship race in first place in overall.  Pool came in second place while Cornett took third.   Westerfield and Pool rode impressively all year long as they both made the top five in overall for this year’s competition.  Westerfield holds fifth place in overall while Pool is in fourth and Jeff Cregg holds third.  This season has brought Gibson to second place in overall.    He said, “I got off to a slow start.  Once I got use to my KTM, I picked it up and came on strong.”

Gibson said, “This track was pretty gnarly with a lot of deep ruts.  You had to really watch where you were going.”  He finished the Cottonmouth in fourth place in overall and took first place in the AA class.  Steve Gordon made the top five and came in second place in AA class.

Louis Gibson, alias Turtle, is no slow moving tortoise.   After becoming the series winner in Senior B class, he decided to check out Senior A class scenery.  He finished Senior A class in fourth place and came in twenty-fifth place in overall.  Scott Martin was in eighth place in overall.  He was the winner of the class and Dallas Mayer and Steve Thomas respectively followed in second and third place while Paul Michels came in fifth place.

Ronnie Hackett and John Giles both had four wins in the Super Senior class this season.  The Super Senior battle ended with Ronnie Hackett taking today’s win and finishing up the series as the Champion of their class while John Giles came in second.  As usual, the Super Senior class wound down to the last battle to determine the winner.   At today’s event, Gerald Westerfield took second place, and John Giles followed in third place.
