Round 3: Willow Creek
The
Mid-South Championship riders made their way further north as the third round
whipped into high gear in
He said, “I
had a decent race going today. I was
second off the start and swapped back and forth several times with my good
buddies. A few mistakes here and there
pushed me to the front. I’m happy with the results because it’s always
nice to win.”
Off the AA start,
Hot Rod Charles Mullins got the holeshot.
At sixteen, he was riding for the first time in AA. He made the holeshot turn like a pro and
entered the creek section one bike’s length in front of Allen and Dustin Gibson
who were battling for second place.
Allen said,
“Mullins was riding really, really fast.
I could tell he was going to crash, and he did.” He went down hard and along with loosing
positions, he lost his bark buster too.
He was going down a hill and hit a breaking bump. He flew over the bars and Allen, Jeff Cregg,
Blair Bersano, and Dustin Gibson got around him.
At the end of
the first lap, F & S Suzuki / Blow Racing Suspension / No Fear backed Bersano picked up the pace and moved into first place while
Allen dropped back to second. They were
tight from that point forward and pulled away from Gibson, Cregg, and Mullins.
Both Bersano and Allen continued their battle and were seconds’
apart at the score tent for each lap.
They swapped places a few times. In
a power lines section four miles from the finish, the Team Green Kawasaki / Sarge’s
Cycles / Pro Action of KY / GPR / IMS supported Allen passed Bersano, pulled some distance, and finished the race in first
place. Meanwhile Bersano
was stuck at the side of the trail, and everyone passed him because something
was wrong with his bike.
Team Green / Maxima / Twin Air / IMS / Cycra
backed Cregg made a comfortable move for third place while Plessinger
Cycles supported Mullins fell into a ravine.
Throughout this race, they went
back and forth. Cregg took the lead away
from Mullins on their second lap. He
said, “I didn’t know I passed him because I couldn’t see him anywhere. I thought he was still in front of me.”
KTM mounted
Mullins got back on his bike, passed Gibson in a thicket, and finished in third
place. He said, “This race was a lot of
fun. I enjoyed riding here, and I really
want to thank my dad and my uncle for all of their support.”
“That guy
[Mullins] was flying!” said Team KTM/ Sarge’s Cycles / Moose backed Gibson. “I passed him out there in a tight section,
and there was this spot up a hill where everybody was stuck. He made it around them, but I didn’t. I tried several times to get around him, but
I couldn’t. He’s fast; he’s crazy!” Gibson struggled mostly with arm pump and
breaking bumps during his second lap, and he lost a lot of time from problems
caused by a crash.
Robbin’s
Turbo / Cycle Shed / KTM / Scott USA sponsored Robbins completed the top
five. He won the Vet A
Championship at the Stoney Lonesome Series, District
15 and said he would like to come to as many MSWS races as possible.
Bersano
said, “I didn’t have a very good start, but I just rode smart and kept plugging
away. I let everyone else make mistakes
and got out front. Then about three
miles from the finish, I ran out of gas.
Next time, I’ll make sure I stop for a squirt of gas because I’d like to
be a contender at this year’s championship.”
Three people
in the series claimed their third win for this season. They were Team Green Kawasaki / Sarge’s
Cycles backed P. A. Allen and Harvey Whitaker and Yamaha mounted Jeffery Welch. Allen rolled into the victory lane as first
place in overall and the AA class for each race. Winning Vet A class, Whitaker made an
impressive seventh place in overall and is currently riding in sixth place in
overall points standing. Welch won 4
Stroke C each time. This race he made
the top four among the novice riders.
